Tributes - Retrospectives - Cinema on cinema
MEXICO , Cuba | 73 minutes | 1959
In Mexico and everywhere else, El Santo is a legend. The masked luchadora (wrestler), whose face was never shown, was a star in the ring and onscreen. El Santo’s first film is a stunning landmark in the history of Mexican cinema, not just in its introduction of a brand-new kind of superhero — it went on to spawn over 50 sequels — but also because it was shot in Cuba on the eve of the revolution. An event screening of a pop culture classic, newly restored by a group of film archivists including none other than Nicolas Winding Refn. LE SOUTIEN DE L’AMEXCID ET DU CONSULAT GÉNÉRAL DU MEXIQUE
