Engaging with the world
BRAZIL | 71 minutes | 2018
Left to his own devices after his mother’s sudden death, Socrates now has to find his own way on the mean streets of São Paulo, struggling to survive as he discovers who he is. Just like his young protagonist, filmmaker Alex Moratto navigates the concrete jungle with unusual sensitivity, always on the lookout. Co-produced by Ramin Bahrani (Chop Shop, 99 Homes), made on a shoestring budget courtesy of UNICEF and with major input from disadvantaged kids in the São Paulo area, Socrates is an astonishingly disciplined first outing, marked by a raw yet delicate naturalism.
