Monday 8th

  • 5:45 pm, STYX, Wolfgang Fischer ; Setting the stage for one of today’s great tragedies — our powerlessness in the face of the migrant crisis — Styx is remarkable in both its handling of a red-hot topic and its tangible sense of mounting urgency.   • 7 pm, SOCRATES, Alex Moratto ; Left to his own devices after his mother’s sudden death, Socrates now has to find his own way on the mean streets of São Paulo, struggling to survive and learn about himself. An astonishingly disciplined first outing, marked by a raw yet delicate naturalism. Director in attendance ! Presented by Image+Nation. * There is a second screening wednesday.
  • 7:30 pm, STICKS AND STONES, Martin Skovbjerg Jensen ; This first film by a promising young Danish director stands out for its narrative (de)construction, editing and an innovative sound design that drives the action forward and takes the viewer to the point of no return. Director in attendance ! * There is a second screening tuesday.
  • 9 pm , M/M, Drew Lint ; Mathieu, a young loner from Quebec exiled to Berlin, locks eyes – and bodies – with Matthias. This unsettling and visually stunning queer thriller will enchant viewers obsessed with the German capital as well as fans of dark intrigue.  Director in attendance ! Presented by MUTEK.

Tuesday 9th

  • 5 pm, FIRECRACKERS, Jasmin Mozaffari ; The “firecrackers” in the title are Lou and Chantal, two teens who have way too much to say for their sleepy, isolated town and who dream of only one thing: leaving. A lyrical, sensitive first feature. Director in attendance ! Presented by Vice. * There is a second screening tuesday.

  • 9 pm, FALLS AROUND HER, Darlene Naponse ; The legendary Tantoo Cardinal shines as Mary, an Anishinaabe musician who flees the outside world to seek refuge in nature. A riveting portrait of resilience, female solidarity and fierce independence. Director in attendance ! * There is a second screening tuesday.

  • 5 pm, THE GRIZZLIES, Miranda De Pencier ; Invented by Aboriginals, the sport of lacrosse takes a turn here as a vehicle for pride and emancipation. The true story of the young players for Nunavut’s Kugluktuk team, who followed their dream all the way to the Canadian national championships, is fast-paced and full of enthusiasm. Director in attendance ! 
  • 6:30 pm, WOMAN AT WAR, Benedikt Erlingsson ; Halla, a music teacher leading a double life, is about to see her dream of adopting a little girl come true. Against a backdrop of environmental mayhem, an off-the-wall, lighthearted and poetic portrait of an Icelandic activist approaching 50. Director in attendance ! * There is a second screening sunday.
  • 9 pm, LEMONADE, Ioana Uricaru ; As the debate rages on so-called illegal immigration, this powerful début feature trains its lens on a Romanian migrant’s desperate quest to obtain a Green Card. Terse and biting, it’s a tough study of one of the day’s most burning issues. Director & main actress in attendance ! * There is a second screening friday.
  • 9:30 pm, BARBARA RUBIN & THE EXPLODING NY UNDERGROUND, Chuck Smith ; Barbara Rubin introduced Andy Warhol to the Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan to the Kabbalah, and Allen Ginsberg to life on a farm. The documentary uncovers the impact that Barbara Rubin had on an underground world that was dominated by men, and reveals how and why one of the freest spirits of the sixties disappeared into legend.
