Spotlight on homegrown cinema
CANADA , Bosnia and Herzegovina | 92 minutes | 2018
Torn apart by fascism, communism and the violent clashes of the 1990s, Bosnia-Herzegovina is a victim of its tragic and complicated history. Today, the country is in the midst of reviving and reinventing itself. This meticulously composed documentary takes a look at four tourist attractions through which Bosnians are reappropriating their land, with results ranging from the glorious to the bizarre. The locations – the site of the Virgin’s apparition, natural pyramids riddled with “energy tunnels,” a majestic river whose waters have been harnessed and a village complex built from scratch by filmmaker Emir Kusturica – are displays of local pride that provide a glimpse into a country that remains a puzzle.
