Quarrelling, making up, little stabs in the back, and boozy despair – as always, Hong Sang-Soo feels right at home here. In his latest opus Grass, he uses his signature finesse to provide short glimpses into the lives of customers at a café that feels cut off from the outside world. As usual, there’s melancholy in the mix, but this time the South Korean director has included a much darker, more desperate dimension too. What at first comes across as comedy can suddenly go all dark...
