Gutsy cinema that breaks new ground
KAZAKHSTAN | 100 minutes | 2018
To save her family after the death of her father, Saltanat, pretty and well-read, must leave the idyllic countryside of her girlhood and head to the city for an arranged marriage – a plight she then tries to avoid. Dogging her footsteps is Kuandyk, a childhood friend who’s utterly devoted to her. Alas, up against the world’s callousness and corruption, the two must deal with one disappointment after another. Recalling the tender melancholy of early Aki Kaurismäki, this enchanting new outing from Kazakh indie filmmaker Adilkhan Yerzhanov balances serious themes with a clever, inventive design, its sublime cinematography – each frame is a veritable work of art – making the bitter pill easier to swallow.
